exhibition "from Aussee to Japan"

Exhibition of the first historical photographs in Japan taken by a young Styrian photographer "The adventurous travels of the Styrian photographer Michael Moser (1853-1912)".

    September 10 to September 30, 2019

Michael Moser, a farm boy from Altaussee, set out for foreign worlds as an apprentice to the Viennese photographer Wilhelm Burger, who was commissioned to document the expedition of the Austrian East Asia Mission in 1868. He was the only one who remained in Japan after the mission, lived there and became an interpreter for the Japanese government in Tokyo. He was even given the honour of meeting the Japanese Emperor. Even today, his photographs are unique testimonies of his time.

"His [Michael Moser's] photographs and reports are among the most valuable documents we have on Japan at the time and on the beginnings of bilateral relations between our two countries."
